Self Employment Means...

19 11 2014

- in my case - I basically work ALWAYS!

It's very hard for me to find the discipline to keep a good work-life balance and I am still not really good at it.

Even though I have been self employed my whole work life.

And that's been a while.

Because I am not in my twenties anymore - actually not even in my thirties...ups, I almost finished the forties!

All this got clear to me when I was interviewed by a german newspaper who printed this DIY together with their questions and my answers.

And one of those questions was about the history of my employment.

I had opened a little jewelry workshop and studio right after I finished my desgin studies back in the beginning of the nineties.

I went on fairs and exhibitions, sold to galleries and to my own customers for many years.

Materials were ordered from catalogs and my invoices were written by hand.

That was all BEFORE the internet and smart phones became widely available!

I had nothing to do with computers and would have never guessed, that this would change some day...

Then I became a mother to two beautiful children and we relocated to California for about ten years.

After returning back to Germany I had to made a decision what to do professionally.

I had many interests besides design and wasn't sure, if I wanted to pick up where I had left.

Everything had changed and designers were now online.

I had no clue about computers and online market places at all.

A friend of mine had already a Shop at DaWanda and took me to Berlin for a workshop.

I still remember the train trip back home that evening when I thought: OK - sounds interesting - I could give it a try...

Fast forward and LOTS of learning and new experiences later - I now have three online shops: DaWanda, Etsy and on NOTHS.

I have this blog and do a lot styling and photography for clients.

Life is good.

I just need to learn that balance thing...

What Is Going On?

05 07 2014

It's been a little quiet here on lebenslustiger.com because I had so much work to do the last weeks.

The special sale where I got featured on DaWanda was a huge success for my shop with many sales.

Slowly life is back to normal and we look forward to summer break.

It's been a very long school year this year with summer break starting at the end of July in lower saxony.

Most states start their 6 week school break on different times in Germany. Some years it's as early as mid of June but sometimes it's late like this year for us.

We won't do our usual summer travel to California this year because we don't want to leave the cats alone with a caregiver for such a long time so soon after our big move to the city. Do you remember this post from back in February?

The cats have been adjusted to the new situation amazingly well - we are extremely happy with this and therefore don't want to take any chances to confuse them with a long absence.

They now use a special 5meter zick-zack cat ladder from our balcony to get down to the garden - I have to show you pictures sometime - because it's so amazing how they do it.

To the amusement of our neighbors we practiced for weeks until they were all able to do it and now they are free to come and go as they want.

If it's quit around here on my blog but you like to participate a little more in our days please consider following me on my Instagram because I post almost daily there even in busy times :-)

Next week I will post a fun tutorial on the crochet dishcloths you see here in the second row!!!

Travel Plans 2014

24 03 2014

I have to admit: I am quite exhausted after our recent move.

I can't believe all this stuff we managed to pile up in the last four years after relocating from California.

I gave a lot away before the move but we still have so many boxes left. We already filled again two large storage rooms in the cellar of the new space!

I wouldn't want to go on a vacation right away since there is still so much exciting work to do in the new apartment like choosing lampshades and decorating, but I love to dream up some destinations we could go visit later this year.

I am inspired by other bloggers lists here but with the cost of the move we probably won't do any big overseas trips this year.

Last year around this time we went to the north cost of Germany and visited the island of Sylt.

We had rented a cute little house together with my brother and my sister in law and their Golden Retriever "Chaney"

It was totally fun and we really want to do it again this year.

HouseTrip for example offers a great selection of vacation rentals worldwide and also rentals at the North Sea for dog owners, because "Chaney" doesn't like to travel too long to a destination. She hates driving the car - even just the three hours from our town up to the cost.

Fernweh Nordsee Fernweh Nordsee

The beaches and waves can be amazing on the north cost of Germany - very inviting for long beach walks.

Fine white sand and beautiful dunes. Lot's of wind and fresh air.

And afterwards a yummy seafood dinner :)

Fernweh Nordsee

Sylter Stadtgeflüster in Westerland is a great restaurant offering homemade food. The interior is cozy and inviting decorated in Long Island style.

They also offer freshly baked cakes and cupcakes for afternoon tea. Unfortunately I learned about this place after our trip last year, but I heard only good reviews about it.

So, we definitely need to go to this island again!

What about you?

Do you have travel plans for 2014?

Do you like to go really far away or do you like road trips and destinations close to your home?

I would love to hear about your travel plans!

Happy Monday,

Anette

P.S. Thanks a lot to HouseTrip for the cooperation in this post.
