DIY: Copper Wire Bowl
15 10 2013
Do you like the Harlequin pattern as much as I do?
I think it's so cheerful.
And do you also like copper as much as I do?
Copper can ad a wonderful warm touch to your decoration.
So I came up with these light and airy wire bowls.
You need:
Copper wire in 0,8mm about 6 meter long.
Of course you can choose any other metal color, too...
I also made a bowl with 1mm wire but it was hard to place the starting knot.
You could also use thinner wire - it makes a really fragile and delicate bowl - very pretty!
To connect all wire and prepare for twisting I place a nice knot at the bottom of the bowl.
I show you how to do the knot with yarn first and recommend practicing this knot in yarn BEFORE you start bending your wire because it is difficult to undo it in wire.
If you are ready then start by cutting 8 equal pieces of wire each 70cm long.
Part into 2 bundle - nicely organized and stacked - with 4 wires each.
Set up as an equal cross with the horizontal wire pack on top of the vertical pack.
Try to place the knot in the middle.
Do the exact same moves as with the yarn.
The wire is acting very different than the yarn. Go around pulling your wire bundle endings one after the other after you have placed the knot.
The pulling part happens in many little steps - not in one big pull like you can do it with the yarn!
Go slow and steady - in the end pulling each single wire until you have a nice knot.
Puhh - that was the hard part!
Now for the fun :)
Pull your single wires apart like sun rays.
Start twisting twice always 2 pieces of wire - making sure in this first round that you connect the "right" and the "left" wire of each bundle with a wire from the neighbor bundle to create a nice and even harlequin pattern right away in the beginning.
And then you probably already see, how the next round will be done.
It kind of evolves naturally by always twisting with the neighbor wire.
Make sure you always finish each round before starting the next round.
It also naturally requires larger diamond shapes each new round.
At this point you can create a flat piece looking like a flower or star ( I will photograph some of those for another post) or you can shape it gently into a bowl by pressing the wire with your fingers.
I love the look with the wild open endings!
If there is not enough length left for another round just bend your endings to each side and weave them in.
Note: This bowl is not intended for small children because it has pointy endings.
I placed my bowls near the windows where the light can play with the harlequin shapes and the reflection of the copper metal.
Happy Day and thanks for stopping by.
